1852 Industrial Exhibition in Providence

Entries:

One Yarn Assorter, well got up, by Joseph R. Brown

One Foot-motion Lathe, by Joseph R. Brown

One Watch Maker's Lathe, made and presented by Lucian Sharpe, of superior workmanship.

One case of United States' Standard Rules, of great variety and perfection of workmanship; made and presented by J.R.Brown, Mathematical Instrument Maker, Providence.

We noticed among many others -

One two-foot German Silver Vernier Caliper Scale. Thousandths of an inch are correctly measured, and transferred, as easily by this scale as thirty-seconds by the ordinary methods.

Also, one Odontograph, invented by Prof. R. Willis, of Cambridge University, Eng., for describing the correct form for the teeth of wheels, and the templets and cutters used in making them.

On one of these Rules we observed an additional line of equal parts by which logarithms from 1 to 10,000 can be readily calculated.

Mr. Brown is entitled to great credit, not only for so fine a display of very perfectly graduated Rules of every description, but also for the construction of his graduating Engine, by which this most minute and perfect subdivision into equal parts is effected.

One Lathe and a variety of small tools, of excellent workmanship, from J.R.Brown.

Awards:

J.R.Brown, for U.S.Standard Rules and Scales, a silver Medal.

J.R.Brown, for one card of ground diamond Points, for Calico Engravers, a Diploma.
