This entry is of interest for several
reasons. Unlike many planemakers, Manchester
appeared to be making planes full time up
until his premature death in 1858 at age 39.
So here we have a planemaker at his prime,
working alone by hand, and producing 730
planes per year. The average cost of the
irons are twenty-five cents, and the average
price of the finished planes are $1.65. Of
course this is only true if the figures
given above are accurate. It's also
interesting that the amount of boxwood
purchased is half the amount of beech, much
more I would think than would have been
required for boxing purposes alone.
Manchester may have used boxwood for many of
his planes.
